-          The Denomination of Origin Valdepeñas as an international reference

-          Bodegas Navarro López is well positioned in the Asian market with its wines of excellent qualities

Valdepeñas, March 11, 2021. Bodegas Navarro López received a prize once again, with a Gold Medal in the SAKURA Awards, with its Vino Don Aurelio Crianza, 2016.

The SAKURA Awards began in 2014, and they are now one of the most distinguished wine competitions in the world. The Valdepeñas Denomination of Origin and Bodegas Navarro López are very well positioned in the Japanese market.

This is a very demanding market, and it is in full expansion. Over 4,652 products, coming from 32 countries, were presented at this 8th edition of the SAKURA Awards, also known as Japan Women’s Wine Awards.

From its beginnings, it has been the most important wine competition judged only by women in Japan; and its awards have increased in recognition, just as the interest for wines has increased in Japan. It is now one of the largest and most important wine competitions in Asia.

Its president, Yumi Tanabe, has always expressed that the Sakura Awards have three objectives: find the perfect wine for home meals, increase the consumption of wine, and support women working in the wine industry. Undoubtedly, obtaining this award opens the doors to a booming market for us.

The wines were evaluated through a blind tasting by a female jury composed of 186 jurors, female experts leading an extensive selection of wine industry sectors in Japan: sommeliers, producers, importers, distributors… all professionals active in the wine industry.

The competition took place in Tokyo and Osaka between the 8th and the 16th of February. Because of the exceptional circumstances we have these days, the tasting was done in private and the awards were published on March 8, on the occasion of the International Women’s Day.

About Bodegas Navarro López

Navarro López Bodegas, that merges tradition and innovation with its large selection of various Spanish D.O. wines, is a company known in over 70 countries, with a brand widely known for its quality, added value, innovation and sustainability.

Wines from other Spanish quality designations of origin are incorporated (DOC Rioja in 2006, PDO Ribera del Duero in 2008, PDO Rueda in 2009) and finally, in 2010, Bodegas Valoria is acquired, in the DOC Rioja.

Since 2001, the winery itself has been geographically framed in a unique environment, surrounded by vineyards, just five kilometers from Valdepeñas and thanks to these characteristics, the best Navarro López wines are made with their own grapes and are immediately crushed on the site.

Because the main grapes are just next to the winery, we can select the perfect moment for the harvest, including night harvests. We have a storage capacity of about 7,000,000 liters, that increases each day.

The winning wine, a Don Aurelio Crianza, D.O. of Valdepeñas, is made with Tempranillo and its tasting notes are cherry red, with a violet rim. On the nose it has aromas of strawberries, cherry, currants and vanilla, soft and balsamic spices after its aging period in French oak.

On the palate it is a long and persistent wine, with a perfect balance. Especially versatile as it combines very well with pates, red meats, assorted stews and cheeses. Its ideal serving temperature is around 15 °C and 17 °C.
